Stephen M. Saland

Stephen M. Saland was born in New York City and raised in Poughkeepsie. He received his B.A. from the University of Buffalo in 1965 and his J.D. from Rutgers Law School in 1968.
He served in the New York State Senate from 1991 through 2012, during which he chaired several committees, including the Senate Children and Families Committee, Education Committee, and Codes Committee. He previously served in the New York State Assembly. He is past-President of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
He has been a featured Brookings Institute speaker, addressing the impact of federalism on our criminal justice system and was appointed by former U.S. Attorney General Reno to the Working Group on Federalization of Criminal Law.
